"The protection of human life can be costly; but so is the neglect of that protection." - Max Anders ... That can be said of all life.

Here is a variation of an easy craft we did as kids. We had made simple black construction paper cats for Halloween (fold paper in half, cut out rounded area from outer edge to make legs, use those pieces one for the head and the other to cut out ears and a tail, adding other color nose, eyes, whiskers)... We hung ours on the windows, but they can stand up - fold a bit of tab in at the bottom of the legs to steady them.

The bullies in people are really shining lately.

I was going to skip this week; but I've just been poked one too many times and decided to vent a bit. ...and made my own "political" sign. ;p

One: White supremacy has no place in this Country or in the future of this planet. GROW UP.

Two: People don't take steroids and experimental drugs for "just the flu", and naysayers throwing tantrums are the ones causing the problems they're throwing tantrums about. GROW UP.

Three: NEIGHBORS should be NEIGHBORLY and respect each other. GROW UP.

The first two are obvious national issues. The third probably is too, but that stems from this: A local Veteran's signs have repeatedly been vandalized - even the "Veterans For" ones. It is pretty obvious the neighbors are the ones doing it. NEIGHBORS. Not only are they disrespecting and bullying a NEIGHBOR, they are disrespecting and bullying someone who fought for their right of free speech and ability to fill their own yards with signs. The Veteran's opinion differs from theirs, and rather than respect it, they destroy and oppress it, deny him his own rights while taking full advantage of the ones he risked his life to ensure them. Shame on everyone who is acting like this.

People need to seriously think about the kind of person they want to be, the kind of person they tell people they are, and what kind of person they are actually acting like.

It all comes down to one very simple concept that too many don't seem able to grasp: Respect.

Weeks ago, I came across a sign on one of my rides that had "DOGS 2020 Because Humans Suck". I'm a cat person, but I thought the sign was great fun. Yet, also a bit sad, because humans seem to be at their worst this year. I thought about doing a Cats one as a coloring page, but didn't want to be a downer about humans - some people actually care and try. Well, then, I just got fed up and was going to do it anyway. ;p But there are already CATS 2020 signs, and I came up with a better spin. ^_~

The photos are just a couple versions of ones you can buy, but they're costly. It's just text, so you can make your own versions. If you want to be nicer, because we should be ^.^, you could put instead something like: "CATS 2020 Because Cats Are Purrfect", or "CATS 2020 The Purrfect Choice". ^_~

I also made a version that could be a leopard
or whatever color cat you like.

I placed the head out further on this one, and after a week or so, the cat started bending down from the weight, feet sliding outward. I said, "Oh, he's playing..!" ^_~ If you encounter this (humidty levels are also a factor in paper curling), you can make the legs under the head stiffer by gluing a strip of paper on the backs and stop sliding by putting the back-side foot against a wall, or side of a shelf.

You can also glue the feet to a "ground" paper, like in this more advanced version of a stand-up cat from Art Projects For Kids.

This tp roll black cat at Where Imagination Grows is really cute.

Lions are often killed for their bones which are sold mainly to Asia where they're substituted for tiger bones in "tiger bone wine" and other things claiming pretty much that they're cure-alls. We would call it "snake oil", here.

Sure, we make healthy broth from the bones of animals. However, we use bird, grass-fed livestock, and fish - the most nutritious being fish, and the most nutritious non-fish being grass-fed cattle.

Predator meat doesn't compare in nutrition, nor do their bones.

The nutrients we need are in vegetarian animals that break down plants and convert those nutrients into types we can absorb. Predators don't convert nutrients: They use them up. People looking for a real health boost should drink fish broth - you don't get anything worthwhile from tiger or lion bones. Driving them to extinction for them is senseless.

Animal Corner has anatomy information on lots of animals and insects.

These are trying times, and I just wanted to share this. It's just part of a short poem I found on a card years ago. When I came across the photo this picture is based on, they just perfectly fit together. ^_^

"When you live in the past with its mistakes and regrets, it is hard. I am not there. My name is not I WAS.
When you live in the future with its problems and fears, it is hard. I am not there. My name is not I WILL BE.
When you live in this moment, it is not hard. I am here. My name is I AM
." - Helen Mallicoat

Adding a note here: Election votes are never 100% counted on election night. That's normal: People just never paid attention before.

Did you know that animals vote, too? ^_^ I've heard of this but not really thought of it in perspective of how we humans think of voting. - I've seen in a documentary that Painted Dogs have a sort of sneeze they use to decide on whether to go on a hunt, and Beverly Joubert recently posted about meerkats voting. You can see and read about other wildlife that uses voting at The New York Times , BBC , and Phys.org.

I sure hope cold weather gets naysayers to mask up. Such deadset willful lack of care for one's community just boggles me. You'd think we were asked to wear aluminum hats. ;p ... My mask has been a great chin warmer. Even on just cool days, the wind when you're bike riding can be chilling. I'll be wearing a mask under my scarf for the extra windbreak. Wish I would have thought of something like that before. ^_~

I've never been big on large gatherings, not a party person, so it's no big thing to me to not gather for the holidays; but I understand most people usually look forward to big festivities. Just, please, keep in mind that you don't want this season to be the last one you get to spend with a loved one. Find unique and fun ways of safely celebrating this year, so that you all have many more to come. ~ My mom would have gladly welcomed the respite! ^o^ Hounded cooks, this is your year to take it easy! ^_~

Earlier this year, I learned about giraffe sleeping very little and was really intrigued, instantly planning to do a sleeping giraffe page one day. This Smithsonian video about giraffe sleep is animated but informative, and NatGeo Wild has video of live giraffe with info. They are endangered and only remain in a handful of places in the wild.

Like cows and horses, giraffe usually sleep standing up. Yet, while domestic livestock may get from 4-6 hours of sleep, wild giraffe can get by on less than two hours - or even no - sleep per day, mainly taken in 5-30 minute snoozes standing up. Cat naps. ^_^ Only occasionally do they risk short power naps lying down, and the way they curl their long neck back has been compared to the way swans sleep. ^_^ ~ Captive giraffe don't need to be on constant alert for predators so will lie down more often and get about twice as much sleep.

Smithsonian also has clips on the interesting way birds and dolphins sleep - resting half of their brain at a time, literally sleeping with one eye open. SciShow also talks about the unique ways different animals sleep.

I trust God will bring all things to good. Our trio just doesn't want to be entertaining poachers. As you can see in the picture, they're still full of mischief. ^,^

Back when Kevin posted the Leopard Touch episode of the Scents and Sense Abilities series, this scene immediately burst forth. ^o^ The holiday season seems like a good time to post the fun - and if you get in trouble for doing it, you didn't learn it here! ;p (If you're not familiar with it: One of the ways naughty siblings torment each other is to hover just short of touching the other. ^,^ ...not that I know anything about that... ;p)

In Scents and Sense Abilities, ten videos I think, Kevin gives great information on the different senses of lions, hyena and leopards and how they compare. If you haven't watched them yet, they made a playlist of them.

This tree picture can be a half-page decoration to hang on your fridge or wall (add some decoration to the background ^_^), but it's designed that you can cut the tree out and glue it to an empty toilet paper roll for a free-standing decoration. Put no more than a 1/2 inch wide strip of glue up the tp roll ~ make a line of glue then run your finger along it. (If it's too wide, or too thick/wet, it will look odd: If that happens, Don't Worry!, you can put ornaments over it. ...like I did. ^_~) I just put a dab of glue behind the top of the ornaments, so they stick out a bit, and using crayon or colored pencil on the tree but markers on the ornaments might help them stand out even more. Remember: It's easier to color before cutting them out.

Playing with mine I got inspired to add a second tree for another version you could try if you like.

Make a second tree, have the first one attached to the tp roll, line up the edges of the second tree to the first and mark on the tp roll where the center of the second tree will touch it. Put a line of glue up the tp roll for the second tree and attach it, making sure edges stay lined up. Then, put just a thin line of glue along an inside edge where the trees meet and press just the very edges together from bottom point to top point. Voila, a neato' 3D tree. ~ A third tree will fit, but depends on the size of your tp roll whether the edges will meet enough to glue together and not pull the top in too much (and you can only see two sides at once).

You can even flip the ornaments over and draw different animals on them, if you'd like. ^_~

We'll just call this "Endangered Species Tree". All these animal species are listed as vulnerable, near-threatened, or endangered. I believe next year will see some improvements, but we all need to work together to make it happen. ^_^

Check out GSTK Christmas cards if you haven't done them before, or would like to do them again. There's links, there, for previous years' Christmas coloring and activity pages, too. ^_^

2020Dec Note : ~ Didn't mean to sound so complaining ^,^, was just letting visitors know why the site might not be very thorough for a bit. ~ Someone else's devices have been interferring with reception here for months, and has gotten super bad in the past couple weeks. Internet now crawls and pages often even simply give up trying to load. So, I can't keep up with anything or research for articles or videos to link to, sorry. Updating the site crawls, too, so it's hard to check if new images and links are working properly - if it's messy, it'll get fixed eventually. ^_~ At least, so far, I can still get connected well enough to my site's host to upload new drawings. Just won't have much new info/links to share with them until I can get more than a fleeting one bar... ^.^;

More Christmasy wildlife crafts. ^_^ These stockings can be attached to an empty toilet paper roll for a free-standing decoration, or to an empty peanut butter jar or the like for a decorative holder for candy canes, markers, etc. (the tp roll will fall over, if you put things in it - I tried ^,^)

You don't need to worry about getting the jar label completely off, as long as it's clean and dry: The wrapping paper will cover it and even stick better. I just put a length of double-sided tape up one side to attach the paper, then pasted one end over the other, and then about a half- to one-inch smear of glue up along the seam to attach the stocking. The sides of the stocking should stick out (not be wrapped around).

You could even embellish the stocking with bits of a stretched out cotton ball (for soft fuzz at the top), or sparkly glitter accents, or writing your name in the top... Have fun! ^_^

Not new, I wanted to remind visitors of a good cause to be charitable to for Christmas: Through the Kevin Richardson Foundation, you can help rangers and communities in South Africa - which also helps lions. Rangers protecting wildlife rely completely on tourism for income. Without tourism, these men and women and their families have no income. Some limited tourism has started to open back up, but there are still a lot of needs that you can help to fill by donating to #dowhatyoucan.

~*~ Merry Christmas! ~*~

Tip for mask wearing in cold weather: Tuck a tissue inside your mask to absorb excess moisture, and change it out as needed. ... Though, after a moment of thought, I'm not sure everyone's mask will hold one in. I designed my mask to not slide around while talking, and that makes it also good for holding a tissue and it not slipping out...

Also going to note, though kinda' late, as it seems many didn't realize before that you should even only wear cloth masks just once (then wash it): Have at least two (cloth) masks, so that while one is drying from being washed, you still have one to wear. I hang mine above a heat vent, and they dry fast. ^_^ I've noticed some even have many different styled masks to go with different outfits. "Some people whine about the rain - other's dance in it." ^_^ Anyway, wash your mask after each use.

Ah, the way I hang them is the ages-old simple trick of tying a clothes pin to a length of yarn and clipping the strap of the mask to hang from a coat-hook above the vent. Actually, I have a clothes pin at each end of the yarn, as I originally fashioned it to hang gloves. ^_~

2020Nov20 woo hoo! ^_^ Another cloudbow! I'm just so blessed this year. ^_^ I was riding along late afternoon, thinking about the lowering sun and wondering at the chance for a cloudbow; but no clouds in the right part of the sky, so let the passing thought go. Then, I turned up another road and, lo and behold, a lonely cloud in just the right spot with a bright cloudbow in the brightness of the low sun. Awe and joy! ^_^ Again, the phone's camera doesn't do it justice, and you may need to tilt your screen back to see the colors better (bright green in the sky is what had caught my eye, but it barely shows in the photo), but I'm sharing anyway. ~ You can click on this photo to see a bigger view.

clever mealtime

Yeah, the photos are awful, but you need illustration to prove this story. ^_~

A bit of a gigglefest... ^_~ ... 2020Oct3 late afternoon at the 20mi park, I turned to watch a hawk winging in low, and he suddenly dropped to the ground. He just stood there for a bit, and I wondered what he was doing, as it was odd behaviour.

What a treat! ^_^ No people around to disturb him (I wasn't very close), he soon was casually hopping around and pouncing, picking at something on the ground, sometimes picking it up to shake it then letting it fall again so he could playfully dance about and pounce on it again. So much like a cat playing with its food, it was hard for me to keep my giggles quiet. ^,^ I have never heard of this behaviour in hawks before. So cool to witness. ^_^

I tried to get photos through my binoculars, but the lighting wasn't right and the strong winds kept trying to shove me over, so I couldn't get the phone's lense to line up with the binocular's eyepiece very well or hold steady... I have used the binoculars to boost the phone's zoom with a little more clarity than this before (turtles at the reservoir), but conditions wouldn't allow it this time.

Well, he finally took off, only to land on a nearby bat house... omg... ^,^; Such a naughty bird!!! He finished off the little meal while perched there, then tried to break into the bat house! ... Watching him, the pieces fell into place: Remembering his earlier low trajectory, I bet he'd come from the bat house at the start and the dark little meal he'd been playing with on the ground must have been a bat. The naughty hawk thinks the bat houses are lunchboxes! ^o^; Poor bats! But very clever bird. ^_~

Now, that behaviour, I have seen before: Long ago, when I had a small farm, we had bluebird houses around the garden. One year, the usual couple would keep going to one of the houses but not nesting in it. I checked it and found ants living in it - took awhile, but I finally figured out the clever little birds had forgone the nice nestbox in favor of farming the ants to eat their plump little eggs. Wildlife is smarter than people give them credit. ^_~
